Data allowances and speed limits

What the numbers on a plan card mean, what happens when you reach them, and what counts as usage.

Fixed data plans

Every plan in the current catalogue is a fixed allowance: for example 10 GB to use within 15 days. Use it as fast or as slowly as you like. The plan ends when either the data or the days run out, whichever comes first.

Daily plans

Some carriers sell a daily allowance instead — say 1 GB per day for 7 days. The allowance resets every 24 hours from activation and unused data does not roll over. Plan cards label these as “per day”.

Speed after the allowance

On a fixed plan, data stops when the allowance is used up; buy another plan to keep going. On a daily plan the carrier may keep you connected at a reduced speed until the next reset. When a plan does this, its card shows the reduced speed, for example “Then unlimited at 512 kbps”. That is enough for messaging and maps, not for video.

Network speed

Profiles connect to the local carrier’s 4G or 5G network where the handset and the carrier both support it. Speed depends on signal, congestion and your device; we do not cap it beyond what the plan states.

What counts as usage

Everything that goes over the travel line: apps, background sync, cloud photo backup, system updates and hotspot traffic. Turning off automatic backups and app updates while roaming is the easiest way to make an allowance last.

Fair use

Plans are for personal travel use on one device. Running servers, reselling the connection or sustained heavy tethering can lead the carrier to suspend the profile.
